Many have called this a defining period for the country. Elections are a big deal everywhere, and people can be quite passionate about them. This passion is both good and bad, as it could drive people to express their passion in ways harmful to other electorates and interfere with public peace. As we go to the polls tomorrow, here are five safety tips for you.
Don’t get into arguments
Your polling unit is not a newspaper stand. And it is definitely not the place to discuss the State of the Nation. These conversations almost always result in arguments. Even when you run into a person you know, which is highly likely, resist the urge to argue.
Don’t reveal who you are voting for or voted for
People can be very passionate about their preferred candidate, so kindly avoid the preferred candidate discussion. Cast your vote for your candidate and keep it to yourself.
Don’t engage in electoral malpractice
This cannot be understated. Let the result of the election truly reflect the will of the people. May the best man win.
Adhere to all voting regulations
Rules exist for a reason. Arrive on time, go to the correct polling unit, and be patient with the officials.
If things start getting heated, it’s time to head home
You are not the friendly neighbourhood Spiderman. If things begin to get heated, it is not your duty to defend the ballot box. Head to your house and let the security agencies handle it.
